Held at CIEMAT in Madrid on June 12-14, the TIARA general mid-term meeting marked the end of the first half of the three-year TIARA-PP project.

Various topics were showcased from within the project. From the organisational Work Packages: the infrastructure web-based database (WP3), the identification of the Key Areas for the TIARA R&D programme (WP4) and the results of education and training survey (WP5) were highlighted. The technical Work Packages (WP6 to WP9) provided details about the new world record vertical emittance in the Swiss Light Source storage ring, progress on the MICE RF system at the ITCF, C-band acceleration achievements at the SPARC facility and design of a multi MW irradiation facility for complex target testing.

During the meeting, a status of the EuCARD and ESS projects were presented as well as an overview of R&D and accelerator infrastructures in Spain, the involvement of the Spanish industrial sector for accelerator R&D and finally the role of the Research Infrastructures in Horizon 2020.

A Governing Council meeting, including the Steering Committee members, followed the general meeting.

Poster for the second meeting on the European Strategy for Neutrino Oscillation Physics (click image to enlarge) Image credit: Neutrino Town Meeting

The second meeting on the European Strategy for Neutrino Oscillation Physics was held the 14-16 May 2012 at CERN, attracting some 150 registrants, from European institutes and beyond.

The goal of the meeting was to collect necessary input from the neutrino oscillation community and prepare a proposal to the Preparatory Group of the European Strategy Group. The consensus of the community should be expressed in this proposal, with a medium- and long-term road map for the accelerator based neutrino oscillation physics facilities in Europe.

The meeting concluded by stressing again the great discovery potential of the physics of massive neutrinos: it raises new questions that have no unique answer in the Standard Model of particle physics, and calls for a high priority programme in Europe. One of the highest prizes, leptonic CP violation, requires accelerator-born neutrino beams. Proposals for a middle and long-term accelerator-based programme were formulated and discussed critically, stressing the importance of a sustained R&D towards the ultimate accelerator and detector facilities, and the synergy with astro-particle physics.

The written proposal for the European Strategy Group will be worked on and presented at the Preparatory Strategy Meeting in Krakow (10-12 September 2012).In addition, Alain Blondel presented Beams for Neutrino Physics: a coherent proposal? in the EuCARD annual meeting. A full report of the Neutrino Town Meeting is available below.

In this summer issue we look at how developments in collimator materials could have applications in aerospace and beyond, and how Polish researchers are harnessing accelerators for medical and industrial uses. We see how the LHC luminosity upgrade is linking with European industry and US researchers, and how the neutrino oscillation community is progressing. We find out the mid-term status of TIARA-PP and how it is mapping European accelerator education resources.

In the headlines we’ve found stories of ILC and CLIC, how particle physics could predict your car’s lifetime, how ICAN will look at laser acceleration and how SESAME is on track for commissioning. We see how accelerator research can benefit from blogging and can be of benefit to numerous applications.

We hope you enjoy this issue. Please contact us with any news or events that you would like added to future issues.

LARP’s role in the luminosity upgrade

Candidates for the LARP Toohig fellowship were evaluated at the May meeting. The Toohig fellowship is named after the late Dr. Timothy Toohig, a physicist and Jesuit priest. Image credit: LARP

What part can US researchers play in the high luminosity upgrade of the LHC? This was one of the key points of the May meeting between the HiLumi LHC project and the US LHC Accelerator Research Program (LARP), which took place in Fermilab, Chicago.

For almost ten years, LARP laboratories (BNL, FNAL, LBNL and SLAC) have been collaborating with CERN in connection with the Large Hadron Collider. Now, with the HiLumi LHC design study underway, the time has come to plan US contribution in concrete terms for the upgrade itself.

LARP has a strong basis in magnet R&D and accelerator physics. For magnets, the move now is to shift from R&D to pre-production prototypes. For accelerator physics, as well as retaining beam-beam studies, there is a growing interest for LARP to participate in crab cavity work.

The May meeting also provided an opportunity to evaluate candidates for the LARP Toohig fellowship. This prestigious opportunity allows post-doctorate researchers to work on LHC activities, dividing their time between CERN and LARP laboratories. Of the four excellent candidates that presented at the May meeting, Silvia Verdu Andres was selected. A second fellowship will be allocated shortly, joining the current Toohig fellows are John Cesaratto (SLAC), Valentina Previtali (FNAL) and Simone White (BNL).

LARP and HiLumi LHC collaborations will continue to be developed, notably with the next joint meeting in Frascati, Italy in November. Presentations from the May meeting are available online.

How many accelerator scientists are we training in Europe?

The total number of trainees (undergraduate to post-doctoral level and including staff) in each country. Data are shown for the academic year 2011 (green), 2010 (red) and the average per year over the 5 years 2005-2009 (blue) (click image to enlarge). Image credit: TIARA

It sounds like a simple question, but no one knew the answer until the recent TIARA survey revealed, perhaps surprisingly, that in recent years more than 1300 people are being trained annually in some aspect of accelerator science (see figure).

Understanding the provision of accelerator science training is one of the key aims of TIARA Work Package 5 “Education & Training” (WP5). To try to get answers to this and related questions, a web-based survey was performed between September 2011 and January 2012. Approximately 100 institutes were contacted in the TIARA member states: Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. In addition, responses were received from several institutes in Greece and the Netherlands. A total of 88 institutes provided data for the survey – a response that, we think, covers the majority of key players in the countries surveyed.

The WP5 team has digested the data and produced a comprehensive report that provides a remarkable snapshot of the current training situation. The data are also in the process of being made available in a user-friendly www-accessible database that allows detailed queries and searches to be made.

The four aspects of EuCARD ColMat task 8.2 “Modelling, Materials, Tests for Hadron Beams” (click image to enlarge).
Work presented at EuCARD’s Annual Meeting highlights important developments for the next-generation of collimators. The results not only impact the LHC’s performance, they also have the potential to go beyond pure accelerator applications.

To bring the LHC beyond its nominal performance, a new generation of collimators will be needed with advanced materials. The ColMat Task 8.2, part of work package 8 of the EuCARD project, is testing a variety of composite materials for the production of prototypes. These tests include shock-wave analysis, FLUKA and LS-Dyna software simulations, irradiation studies, and mechanical tests.

To be effective, collimation systems must satisfy two main functions: removing stray particles, which would induce quenches in super-conducting magnets; and shielding other machine components from beam orbit errors. Metal Matrix Composites, such as diamond or graphite reinforcements, as well as copper and diamond, and molybdenum and diamond, are being studied to assess their qualities in addressing the intrinsic limitations in current collimators.

From the initial tests, Metal Matrix Composites with diamond reinforcements have shown to be particularly promising as they combine properties such as robustness and high thermal and electrical conductivity from both compounds. Not only does this benefit future collimators, but Alessandro Bertarelli highlighted in his presentation and subsequent report that this R&D programme has the potential to be useful to nuclear, aerospace and thermal management communities as well.

Euspen’s event in May brought together researchers and industry from around the world, helping to push boundaries in precision engineering. It provided invaluable opportunities for industry to become involved with CERN, including the luminosity upgrade of the LHC.

The two-day event entitled “Precision Engineering at CERN: Future Challenges & Opportunities”, included a number of presentations from keynote speakers and CERN's senior programme managers. The presentation given by Lucio Rossi (HiLumi LHC Project Coordinator) highlighted the precision engineering needed for this advanced upgrade from cryogenic mechanics to equipment and tooling. Industrial expertise in the fields of high vacuum, advanced remote handling and new material development for radiation-hard insulators is vital for this upgrade, which in turn requires infrastructure from civil engineering, electrical engineering and cooling and ventilation.

Given the need for collaboration between science, engineering and industry in the high luminosity upgrade, an Industry information event is planned in spring 2013, in partnership with the TIARA-PP and EuCARD projects. This will focus on superconducting magnets, superconducting radio frequency and cryotechnology, as well as new materials and surfaces. Events like these enhance opportunities for collaboration between science and industry, and create a platform for discussion. Click below to read more about Euspen’s event.
