In this spring issue, we look at developments towards higher luminosity and higher energy colliders. We report on the technology developed for the remote powering of the LHC magnets and studies of diagnostics based on higher order mode port signals. We also inform you about the main outcome of the TIARA survey on market needs for accelerator scientists.

Expanding further the scope of the newsletter beyond EuCARD, HiLumi and TIARA projects, we are introducing the Accelerator Topic activities of the CRISP (Cluster of Research Infrastructures for Synergies in Physics) European project and featuring the long term perspective for High Energy Physics via TLEP.

In the headlines, we learn about a new insulating compound for superconducting magnets, US-CERN partnership to accelerate neutrino research, recent results about the particle that we can now name a Higgs boson. We update you concerning the strategy for European particle physics and situation on linear colliders. Finally, we’ve found stories on how superconductivity leads the way to high luminosity and the huge impact of accelerators on semiconductor industry.

In this summer issue we look at how developments in collimator materials could have applications in aerospace and beyond, and how Polish researchers are harnessing accelerators for medical and industrial uses. We see how the LHC luminosity upgrade is linking with European industry and US researchers, and how the neutrino oscillation community is progressing. We find out the mid-term status of TIARA-PP and how it is mapping European accelerator education resources.

In the headlines we’ve found stories of ILC and CLIC, how particle physics could predict your car’s lifetime, how ICAN will look at laser acceleration and how SESAME is on track for commissioning. We see how accelerator research can benefit from blogging and can be of benefit to numerous applications.

This summer saw CERN announce to a worldwide audience the discovery of a Higgs-like boson, so this issue takes a look at the machine behind the discovery, the LHC, as well as future plans for a possible Higgs factory in the form of LEP3. Looking ahead too are European strategies for particle physics and accelerator-based neutrino physics. In addition, taking stock of the work so far, HiLumi LHC and EuCARD showcase their latest results.

In the headlines we’ve found stories of how Fermilab magnet developments and Italian advancements in magnet design and superconducting cables are helping the LHC high luminosity upgrade. We update you on the new Russian SuperB partner and the expansion of the UK Institute for Accelerator Science. We highlight the recent LHC proton-ion collision tests and the planned run extension into 2013. We also show how through outreach and proton therapy, accelerator science can make a difference to society.

In this summer issue we are approaching the end of EuCARD and have welcomed the beginning of EuCARD-2. We are pleased to report on the recent fruitful events including the workshop on "Visions for the future of particle accelerators" and the TIARA workshop on RF power generation.

We find out about the improvements for FAIR and SPIRAL2 within the CRISP project, the successful 11 Tesla project and the latest achievements within EuCARD. The approval of the update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics by the CERN council is also highlighted.

In the headlines, we have found stories about cherry pie colliders, ILC technical report published lately and further developments towards industrial and medical applications of accelerators. Amongst the events, we also highlight the upcoming ICAN Symposium.
